In the Studio Today... Tomales Bay Ranch; Session #6

Wednesday, January 31, 2007
I believe this is Martinelli Ranch, on Route #1, overlooking Tomales Bay. This is Panel B of 2 canvases, each are 16" x 20".

This is Panel A of 2 canvases, each are 16" x 20".

Here are the 2 canvases, together. Total size is 16" x 40". I am done with this painting, at this point. There is a moment when I feel I have added energy and painterly strokes to all areas of the canvas, and adding any more detail would be overworking the canvas. I like people to be able to feel it is a painting, and about color and paint, and see and feel the energy in the strokes I've made.

I worked for about 1.5 hours today, primarily adding warm highlights to the cyprus trees.

More details near the barn, and in the trees. Click on any of these images for larger versions showing details. About 3 hours of work in 2 sessions today, not including the set up and break down time (or the time to photograph and put on this site!)

Cow grazing at Chimney Rock Ranch, Pt Reyes, CA
12" x 16"
I was out looking at the rainy sky today, and tried to capture what I was observing in this sky. There is often a foggy, misty, changing light out near the coast, that is hard to capture from a photo and must be done outside. Not sure if this painting is done yet... I was thinking of adding more forground detail in the grass, but I may wait and move on to another painting at this point.

Did a couple more hours of cow detail tonight...

In the Studio Today... Pt. Reyes Cow; Session #1

Tuesday, January 23, 2007

I started a new cow painting today. This cow was grazing on the ranch at Chimney Rock, Pt. Reyes, Ca. This is after 1 hour of blocking out the colors/shapes.

In the Studio Today...Session #5

Sunday, January 21, 2007

This is the result of 5 different sessions at the canvas.
I chose not to put the 4 signs in the painting that sit on the lawn in front of the palm tree. They read:
"Montgomery Chapel"
"Montague Hall"
"Preaching and Worship Center"
"San Francisco Theological Seminary"
I thought that all those words would take away from the scene, and the interaction between the place, the lighting, and the bug. For more information on these buildings, view them on the SFTS website.

Today was the second day working on this painting of Montague Hall, San Anselmo, CA. I put in about 3 hours of work, adding highlights and details. See my previous post to see the first day's work(yesterday), blocking in the colors.

Here is what I am working on right now...

This is a fairly large canvas, 2 feet x 2.5 feet...
I spent an hour and 1/2 today, "blocking out the colors". This is where I lay down the basic background colors and shapes for the scene. This is a local scene in San Anselmo. The Montague Hall is part of the

  • I loved the convertible bug in front of the building, as it gave a great color contrast to the stone building, and a nice size reference. Palm trees and the bug give it the California place setting.

Tonight I will go in and add more detail after the painting has dried for several hours.
